Jesus as a prawn causes complaints

jesus prawn
The ASA today ruled that an ad placed in The Grocer magazine depicting a nativity scene with a prawn in the manger did not breach the CAP code. The Big Prawn Company were advertising their “new King prawn”. Text underneath the picture stated “‘A KING IS BORN’ ORDER NOW TO ENSURE A CHRISTMAS DELIVERY”.

The ASA received 37 complaints, the Big Prawn Co 16, and The Grocer 28. The advertiser and the magazine responded to each complaint, and an apology was published in the following issue.

The ASA ruled:

While we noted some readers had been offended by the depiction of a prawn in place of the baby Jesus, we considered that the approach would be seen as light-hearted by most readers of The Grocer; it was unlikely to cause serious or widespread offence.

Some people react badly to seafood.

Hey, don’t forget that to the gullible supernaturalists, seafood’s an “abomination”…

    🙂

  2. Stuart says:

Aww, you beat me to it Andy. Yes, perhaps Leviticus was prophetic than we thought.

Fantastic stuff. I wish I had seen that. If they were a consumer brand, I’d out and buy some tomorrow. There must be a of jokes and bad puns to be had there. What a shame I can’t think of any at the moment. A jar of thousand island dressing to the one who comes up with the best (i.e. worst) pun.

We can put out some feelers and see if anyone takes the bait.

    Here you go…

Christians tell The Grocer; ‘know your plaice’
Next move – Bishop takes prawn
    God Squad gets crabby
Its a fish-ous circle (of Hell)

  5. Tiger Dunc says:

I was beginning to think that no one else was going to chip in with any fish jokes, but thanks Stuart, the scale of your contribution has left me feeling gill-ty at my own minnow like attempts. I’m fin- ished.

Sorry if I am taking the piss, but to my mind, that is what this story deserves. Did they say who actually complained? Why wasn’t Dog Shit asked his opinion on this? He must be on holiday.

  6. Chris says:

That’ll be the prawn again Christians then…

  7. bearflea says:

Aren’t prawns bottom feeders? Maybe the resemblance was too close for comfort as far as the Dogshit crowd goes. I can’t be the sole person to notice this?

  8. Marc says:

Oh Cod! i’ve already halibut enough of the sharkingly bad fish jokes. they’re giving me a haddock
