Scottish Catholics join bloody Bible ad fray

The Catholic Church in Scotland has voiced its support for the police investigation into the GPA Bloody Bible ad. Scotland Yard are investigating whether or not the Gay Police Association committed a “faith crime” (there is no such thing), by suggesting that there was sometimes a link between religious belief and homophobic violence.

Peter Kearney, spokesman for the Scottish bishops, described the ad as “outrageous and intolerant”.

This is exactly the kind of intolerance that gay groups claim they are trying to clamp down on.

Once again, it is the Christian Bible which has been singled out with a headline which has Christian connections. It is another sign that Christianphobia has become fashionable and acceptable.

The word “Christianphobia” was coined in an attempt to emulate the tactic used by Muslims to silence any criticism of their religion by giving it a label akin to “racism”.

Meanwhile, Conservative Scottish MSP Murdo Fraser has table an motion in the Scottish parliament condemning the ad:

[Parliament] rejects this assertion as totally erroneous; values Scotland’s Christian community and the contribution it makes to our society and our culture; deeply regrets that any police officer would choose to place an advertisement in any medium to make such a gratuitous insult to a section of the Scottish population; and hopes that the all police officers will act in a manner that reflects fully the attitudes, values and beliefs which Scotland, as a modern society founded on the Christian faith.

As David Lyle, the GPA Scotland officer responded,

The GPA article and statement in The Independent only sought to highlight the facts. […] People cannot be allowed to hide behind the cloak of religion as an excuse to commit hate crime

This still totally baffles me. A lot of religious groups campaign every day, claiming that homosexuality is a sin, its dirty, its disrespectable, its pitiful, hell you even get Americans walking around now with signs that say “God hates fags” – harrassing people in the street and getting away with it. Claiming that the suffering of the USA is punishment for its tolerance of homosexuals.

And they’re saying that they doesn’t at least encourage that sort of behaviour towards gay people?

Maybe the Scots churches should just admit they’re organising an open season on gays, now that nobody can afford to shoot grouse.
If you look on Gary Otton’s excellent ‘Scottish Media Monitor’ site you can find plenty more on this crap. Also, from reports yesterday looks like the Catholic Church is trying to kick off a ‘rights’ campaign getting companies and organisations to ignore the 2006 Equality Act clauses on discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation.
Otton points out that when the rest of the UK papers were covering terrorist alerts, the Scottish Daily Mail led with Cardinal O’Brien’s campaign and some witterings about schools being ‘told to teach gay sex’.

At least if they teach “gay sex” we’d see less children having children.
Anyway, all this anti gay stuff from the catholic church, shouldn’t they be concentrating on keeping the priests* out of the kids?

The Catholic branch of supernaturalism is certainly having a “fair go” at the moment up here. Cardinal Chief O’ Irrationalism has been banging on a fair bit about Scotland supporting “State sectarianism”, because of the Act of Settlement, etc. And the composer James Macmillan (mostly turgid stuff with the occasional tune) tried to make the argument that included the fantastic you-can-say-anything-with-statistics claim that catholics were discriminated against because the made up a disproportionately large percentage of the Scottish prison population.

Interestingly, I’m sure the Cardinal wouldn’t like the ending of taxpayer-funding of supernaturalism-based schools, one of the main reasons we still have deeply ingrained sectarian nonsense up here. And Mr. MacMoron obviously didn’t consider that those stats could equally be used to suggest that catholicism breeds criminality.

    Still, it sells papers…
