Ofcom exonerates Liddle
Rod Liddle’s The New Fundamentalists, a Channel 4 documentary about the rising influence of evangelical Christianity in the UK, provoked 123 complaints to Ofcom. Complainers alleged that the programme was not “duly impartial”, and was “offensive” to Christians and their beliefs.
Ofcom acknowledged that Liddle “did undoubtedly make his case robustly”, but judged that no rules of the Code were broken.
You might remember that the UK Life League were so outraged by Liddle’s “grotesque attack on Christian morality” that they sent his personal contact details to supporters via an email circular. It is likely that they are disappointed with Ofcom’s decision.
Wonderful examples of living Christianity, this lot are. They make a practice of publishing people’s personal addresses and other details. One of their latest victims was a Catholic school in Surry (Woldingham), which has to teach sex education according to the National Curriculum. But that doesn’t fit with the UK Life League’s plans for this earth, oh, no. They decided on a hate-mail campaign, as they have done with abortion clinics and hospitals. Meanwhile, a gynaecology nurse at King’s College Hospital in London has had her private address published on the group’s website. The group accused her of being a “cold-hearted baby killer”.
It’s run by a chap called Dames Dowson, who has offices in London and Glasgow. He’s a former member of the Orange Order and is a self-styled vicar. He operates from Trafalgar House in Piccadilly. According to the Guardian, “Office staff said they were horrified when they saw the leaflets he was sending out and were led to his website, where images of what he claims are late abortions are posted.”
That above should have been “loving Christianity”, but “living” does just as well. Christianity like that is alive and kicking – with the emphasis on kicking.
If you check out ‘Searchlight’, the anti-fascist site, you can also find suggestions of firearms offences and the funding of ‘Precious Life’ (original name of this mob) by a Dublin-based group of anti-abortion thugs called ‘Youth Defence’. Once you start getting into their links in turn with Italian bombers you realise this guy is a long way from being someone with deep concern for human life.
Don’t think his remarkable ‘inside’ knowledge about a series of fires in Northern Irish family planning clinics which led to the police saying they felt unable to protect the staff has ever been properly explained either.
What we need is this guy’s home address, then we can send him turds through the post.
Who’s? Liddle’s? I expect he’s had worse than that poked through the door.
Decent outcome that. Now, can we have it repeated again.
Ah, yes, but as with all gifts, it’s the thought that counts.
Liddle? Eh? I was talking about Dowson. Do keep up dear!
