Mohammed cartoon to be auctioned for quake victims
More news from Denmark.dk on the cartoon controversy. Franz Füchsel, one of the 12 cartoonists who submitted a portrait of Mohammed to Jyllands-Posten, is auctioning his drawing and donating the proceeds to the Pakistan/Kashmir earthquake relief effort.
I am pleased to be able to donate my drawing to the victims of the tragic events in Kashmir.
Füchsel, whose cartoon is shown here, was surprised by the intensity of reaction against the “Faces of Mohammed” series, but has no regrets about taking part.
It was never my intention to sully or degrade someone else’s religion. I was given a task, and as a citizen in a democratic country, it is my right to have an opinion about things, even though it may be provocative.
In response to the ambassadors from 12 Muslim countries who called on the Danish prime minister to intervene, Füchsel had this to say:
Before the countries where democracy is something of a foreign term begin to read too much into this, they ought to set their own house in order. Where I live, it is okay to criticise others without being strung up.
Give that man a Nobel prize.
The cause is a good one, of course, but I suspect there’s mischief afoot here, too. Think about it. Tee-hee.
Democracy and chartiy work with bad stomach gasses, oh I smell it from here ,,, oooph
I just would like to know what will you “the free democratic†counties do if a Muslim newspaper published a caricature about your prophet?? Or should I say God??
Which is, by the way, next to impossible because ,simply, Muslims have to respect all the prophets. And if a Muslim makes fun of another prophet then he will be considered a disbeliever (not a Muslim).
And you are speaking about freedom of speech!!!!!!!! Then why every time a person talks about the holocaust and says that is all fabricated and is just a big lie that you all bought you shut his mouth and send him to court???? Isn’t this against what you are talking about?? “Freedom and democracy and…………â€
i agree with comment three about the holocaust. The guy who drew the cartoons is a old danish bastered were are the muslim leaders who are ment to talk when situations like this come at one time when an non muslim did somthing like this the khilafah would send them a fatwa.
“It was never my intention to sully or degrade someone else’s religion…”
now how stupid can you get that was obviouse wasnt it funchesela or what ever your name is you dumb fuck
How much respect does a man show when he walks into a crowd of children and blows himself up?
How much respect did Iran and Iraq show each other when the fought during Ramadam?
How much respect should we show someone who is lying and saying something did not happen?
Let’s see if you lie about the holocaust you get taken to court.
Freedom of speech is freedom to speak opinion and truth, not the right to lie.
If you say something that “defames” Mohammad or Islam they try to kill you.
Freedom of speech, as long as you say what they want you to say.
If you decide you want to convert from Islam to something else, they try to kill you.
Freedom of religion, as long as its toward Islam, not away.
Allow me to introduce you to the muslim point of view, whih I am sure you will embrace with an open-minded,”democratic” way:
I, as a muslim, don’t think that blasphemy is freedom of speech. And I will ask everyone the classic question-are you “free” to stand amid a crowd and yell at the top of your lungs FIRE!! just because you felt like it?
As muslims we were trully shocked and didn’t expect the Danish population, whom we don’t hold grudges against at all, to treat that sensitive matter that lightly.
Thank you.

It is however not impossible in Denmark to depict such icons because there is a very liberal freedom to express. There are plenty of skecthes and drawings making fun of cristian icons in the danish medias (some of wich are quite funny. I can find some if any is interested).
You may wonder way. Well, this is our belief, that any sentiment, statement or any uttered word is allowed to be critizised and otherwise subjected to debat. This is one of this country’s fundemental pillars on which it’s constetution is build. Now, we are aware that with this liberal right to express ourselves there comes a great responsebility. But it is a responsebility of the individual – a person can say or write or draw anything he or she wishes as long as it is in the legal confines of the law regarding the freedom of expression. He must however be aware that every action has a consequens – and some seems to forget this.
The cartoons were subjected to censurship according to the law of free expression and was not found violating this – thus the pictures were posted by the independent newspaper. Some might say the reaction would have been obvious but you never know unless you test the boundries of the system in wich you work. Now, because of liberal the way things are debatted in the DK we never foresaw that the incident would backfire the way it did. And I for one (I can’t speake for others) would be trouly sorry if I were stupid enough to offend people like this even if it were within my rights.

Any religion I know of either the bible or the koran or any other belief preaches compassion and love to the next person, and condems the taking of your own life. The way I see it, is that they where intented as a set of rules whereby people could live with respect for each other. Now along the way I think someone got some of the words and their meaning all mixed up – but who am I to jugde.
I think that this situation clearly illustrates the dilemaes that arises when religiuos dogma and a democratic freedom to express oneself interacts – there are definitely some problems there needs to be adressed.
I applaud the cartoonist. I am sick and tired of pretending to show respect and tolerance to backward
peoples from backward cultures who trample upon, torture, discriminate against and mistreat their
own kind well enough without the intervention of outsiders. Let this be a lesson to all who think
that letting Turkey join the EU is a good idea. And anyone who disputes that Arab countries and their
cultures are not backwards, and that this does not have something to do with the brand of Islam they
practice, has never walked the streets of Cairo, Tripoli, Tunis and any other Arab town. Or is dirt,
squalor, inequality and discrimination, openly displayed every few yards, a sign of progress?
In my country (Malta) people complain from time to time because many nightclubs operate a very
restrictive policy when it comes to letting in Arab nationals. The politically correct will tell
us it is racist. The bouncers say it is because too many of Middle Eastern origin harass the girls.
Enough! Muslims in general and Arabs in particular should earn respect by realising that we all
live in a community of different peoples and beliefs before expecting it in return!
Haha, Mark from Malta, Racial Profiling IS Racist. I’m sorry to tell this to you,
but being of Middle Eastern origin does not automatically dictate your behavior.
I realise that this type of racism probably helps all the nightclub peoples have a better
time, and it probably works, but that doesn’t mean it’s not racist. You’re pre-judging someone
based on a factor that doesn’t directly relate to the problem you are addressing. Maybe
things are different in Malta, but here at the University of Waterloo in Canada, we have many
foreign and immigrant students, and most have a very respectful view when it comes to people
of different genders.
In fact, this is the whole problem. Pre-judging people, condemning people into pre-defined
roles that don’t actually fit them. “He’s from the Middle East so he must be a backwards jerk.”
“He’s from Denmark so he must piss on mohammed, so let’s kill him.” Man…
In fact, I think the problem is poor, uneducated people. If they’re uneducated, they haven’t been
taught to think, and it’s a rare man that learns to think all on their own. If they’re poor,
they’ve got nothing to lose, and they are more willing to do something crazy like kill someone else.
So here’s my solution: We either Kill all the poor, uneducated people, or we educate them
so they can stop being poor and uneducated. Both of these seem a tad on the expensive side, so I
a compromise between the two would probably be the best. Plus, think of the backlash for killing dudes.
We kill as many poor, uneducated people as possible, then apologize to the survivors, paying them
off so they aren’t poor anymore, and will hopefully become educated in the end.

Great !
Well done Denmark & Franz. Its about time someone stood up and was counted. In England we are too frightened to publish-shame! I am a christian and people say all sorts of bad things about Jesus, but we dont threaten to go and kill people. Why cant Muslims realise the rest of the world does not wish to be enslaved as they are-and we will not dance to their tune.
In reference to some of the above comments. 3 Klaid I’d have to say that I agree and or understand with what you’re saying except for the last part. I was not really outraged or even surprised by the remarks about the holocaust. One has to be either ignorant or uneducated to think that it was fabrication though. Freedom of speech is an awesome right that I have enjoyed my whole life and it’s too bad that not everyone has that right. 4 Zakib, way too much hate dude. I would hope that you would be able to resolve the issue without calling for a fatwa. It is hard to convince someone or to help someone understand your point of view through death and destruction. One of my favorite saying is “Kill E’m With Kindness. 6 Masa, I have to say that I completely understand exactly what you are saying. Because I am not Muslim I can not fully understand but I also think that the editor should have used a lot more judgment. I also think that nobody should be charged or brought to court or even killed, not the un-caring, insensitive cartoonist or the whacked out nut job in Iran. 5, 7, 8 Rich, Ken and Mark, right on brother…
I skipped a couple due to the lack of subject. Thanks for the time…..
some guys here does not make any sense; if you cannot respect your own profet and enjoy mocking
about that and then call that freedom I guess you may do that ..but if you mock other people
religion and think this is “your freedom” .I am sorry but you are mistaken .
I cannot just come and insult your family in the newspaper and call that “my freedom” ..i think you take me
to court for that ..it is the same here ..Mohamed is More than a family to every muslim either you
like it or not ..
I guess also the guys who talk about Middle east and Arab world have never even see that ..they either
have wrong info or full of hate to muslims ..I suggest you can visit some of these countries and see.
We( in the middle east) Respect all other religions ..you are free to practise whatever you
think is right ..no body will force you to become a muslim..
The way(some of) the muslim world has reacted to this is quite frankly, DISGUSTING. It only goes to
prove what some people, quite wrongly, think: that Islam is becoming increasingly extremist. I’m not saying
its right to disrepect other people’s religion, that is by no means correct, but there are better wayss to
to show your distain that to smash windows, burn flags and send death threats. how childish and well, dam right
uncivilised.
When it was claimed the holocaust was fabricated, you did not see the jewish community behaving in such a way.
Have you never heard of peaceful protest? I propose that the Muslim world GROW UP and fast, because the rest of the world is tired of you screaming blue bloody murder!
For one to become engulfed in a religion it is requried that he or she picks up that particcular text – and that’s when it will become subject to scrutiny. Now, in a regime where freedom of speech is not allowed you won’t be abel to debat whether you agree with the text or not. Critic views are simply subdued (as are their authors) in favor of the “right†way to interpret the text and it becomes a dogma. Now, a society that swears legiance to one single idea or dogma will always be weaker than others simply because it doesn’t allow itself to se itself within the context of other views. Muslim schoolars have spent the last several centuries trying to fully interpret the Quran and when it was done they moved on to the interpretation of the interpretation – thus every single word and context in the Quran has been flipped and analysed countless times giving it different meanings according to the interpretor. A lot may disagree with me but the facts speak for them selves.
The global average amount of monye spent on research is 1.4 % of every country’s BNP (brutto national product) – in the arab countries this amount is less than 0.15 % of their BNP. You don’t have to be a scientist to figure out that the sum of knowlegde represented in these countries is sicnificantly lower than in other countries. Why? is that one might ask. This is because about 5 centuries ago the schoolars began debatting that Islamic justice teaching (jurisprudence of islamic law) was the only science that led true enlightment and life after death – thus deeming other sciences infirior or even illegal.
This is IMO a huge shame considering the arab countries’ contribution to mathematics and medical and architeclural science in the past. They had one of the most flourishing cultures the world has seldom seen around 700 – 800 A.D. and then it slowly started to degrade.
I agree that freedom of speech should not encompass blasphemy, but what I don’t agree with is the way in which various faiths are treated unequally. Why is it that other faiths get so much media coverage when something is mentioned, depicted etc against their faith and yet Christians never get any respect that commands such apologies! I remember a few years ago when the music magazine NME depicted an image of Christ crucified on an upside down cross with satanic symbols adorning the front page. This caused outrage amongst the christian community and I for one went into action to do something about it. Yet did we receive a public apology from any minister? NO!! So forgive me if I don’t sympathise when other faiths are knocked because until we are all treated fairly and equally then I shall have no respect for the government of this country until they pull their act together and disallow such publications of blasphemy against ALL faiths. ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you’ Freedom of rights and speech should be totally alienated from causing offence to others and we cannot and should not allow the two to intertwine, Where do we draw the line of morality and respect for one another? Society has shown that through lack of good leadership, morality and prinicples we have developed a shameless people who have no regard for others and that is just so sad. Christians do not preach war and hatred, but love and compassion for one another and yet we are the brunt for many a joke; the name of Jesus Christ is spoken every day only not in an edifying manner, we are disallowed from sharing our faith in schools etc, but it’s okay to explore others – where is this democratic society that people speak about?
Things will get worse I’m afraid to say, but as a Christian I know that I can stand with confidence because I know the truth and the truth has set me free!
What a joke!

Freedom of speech?
Because we can say something, it doesn’t follow that we should. Because we can draw something, it doesn’t follow that we should.
Maybe it was rude to print the cartoons, and rude to be angry that they were printed.
ITS A CARTOON! NOT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY! Please please please get a life
and concentrate on something worthwhile like helping the poor or sick or
homeless. Honestly! The amount of attention paid to this makes Muslims look
silly and Westerners look like school children. The whole lot of you GROW UP
and GET OVER YOURSELVES!!
FIRST OFF I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT I’M A HISPANIC CATHOLIC
AND I THINK THAT THIS CARTOON IS TOTALLY DISRESPECTFUL AND
TASTELESS TOWARDS THE MUSLIM/ISLAMIC RELIGION. I KNOW THAT MANY
OF THE WORLDS MORONS THINK THAT ALL MUSLIMS AND ISLAMIC PEPOLE ARE
TERRORIST WELL THAT NOT TRUE. ALOT OF THESE PEPOLE ARE DECENT AND
SMART. THEY DO NOT DESERVE TO BE TREATED LIKE THE ENEMIES OF THE WORLD
BECAUSE OF THIER RELIGION OR DESCENT. IF YOU IDIOTS OPEN YOUR EYES
AND LOOK AROUND YOU YOU’LL REALIZE THAT THERE ARE OTHER TERRORIST IN
THIS WORLD THAT ARE NOT ARAB!!! LOOK AT THE TRIADS AND THE ETA!!!
DONT BE IGNORANTE AND JUST LOOK AROUND YOU AND YOU’LL SEE WHAT IM TALKING
ABOUT. ANOTHER THING I KNOW THERE IS A THING AS FREEDOM OF SPEECH BUT
YOU REPORTERS ARE SUCH LOWLIVES THAT YOU HAVE TO INSULT OTHER PEPOLES
RELIGIOUS BELIEFS TO GET A PAYCHECK!!! REPORTERS LIKE THIS MAKE ME SICK AND
I HOPE THESE PEPOLE BURN IN HELL FOR IT!!! HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF SOMEONE MADE FUN
OF SOMETHING YOU HOLD NEAR AND DEAR TO YOU HOW WOULD YOU FEEL THEN. YOU ABUSE
YOUR POWER TO COMMIT BLASPHEMY AND THATS REAL SICKENING YOU PEPOLE HAVE
NO MORALES AND WILL BURN IN HELL FOR IT.
I have to admit my shock at the outcry for an apology from the Danish government.
How is any of this THEIR fault? The cartoons were run in a newspaper. The Danish government
did not tell the newspaper to run them.
So now some armed muslim groups are even advocating harming(murdering)Norwegians, Danes and French
in the Palestinian territories. I am sure these people had to have had something to do with
the cartoons.
Yup. Must have. No doubt in my mind.
Holocaust?
Why do we never hear of the 18 million Russians that were murdered?
The Power of the Jew I suspect, they are more to be feared that the Muslims!
“religion is poison”
The panic over these cartoons is ridiculous. It’s time for the human race to grow up and admit that
all religion is just primitive superstition anyway; a fairytale that enables people to live in denial
of the fact that their egos are extinguished by death.
To me, the message in the twelve cartoons allegedly the cause of uproar in the
middle east are hardly understandable except to say that the middle east
continues to be a source of discontent for many in this world.
I suppose that beauty and defamation are equally in the eye of the beholder.
I remember as a grade school child learning the lesson that:
“sticks and stones can break my bones, but names can never hurt me.”
Apparently, that lesson is lost on a great number of people as is the
importance of the freedom of expression, especailly expression in the
medium of images where one man’s beauty is another’s beast.
There is a verse from the new testament, Matthew 7: 16:
“By their fruits shall you know them.”
Rioting and destruction are one fruit. Lines on a piece of paper are another.
Which does one prefer?
As for me, I prefer to encourage expression that is not destructive to
evoke feelings. Destruction is destruction. Cartoons on pieces of paper
do not destroy.
Let us live in peace.
it is a good drawing of mohamid
the lord will destroy all evil and the good shall live
We go to war for everything else, lets war over a cartoon..
When Muslims scream the whole world must sit up and take note. Only Muslims may ridicule other religions in their newspaper cartoons.
Jews and Christians are poked fun at on a daily basis. In fact all infidels must die because they aren’t Muslim. I am finding the
Muslim faith more offensive by the day. It is a faith sabotaged by fanatics with the tacit approval of so-called moderates who
sheepishly stand by, wringing their hands in false disapproval of their brothers. The sooner the west stops pandering to the
outrageous demands of Muslims the better. Muslims, do not forget that you need not live in the west if they do not want to. Nobody is
forcing you to stay. Feel free to go back to wherever you came from. We WILL be happier without you.
Although I’m an atheist I agree 100% with the Muslems that freedom of speech does not justify derision of what they hold most sacred. When I examined the cartoons however, I have seen nothing that derides either Islam or their prophets. The cartoons do not dehumenize moslems, nor should they offend any sensible human being.
Nothing in the contents of the cartoons even states that the subject is the prophet. Regarding the ‘bomb in a turban cartoon’ I can’t see Moslems who sanctify sucide bombers getting angry about a dipiction of the prophet as ‘a terrorist’ – nothing in the picture says his act of self sacrifice is not justified.
MUHAMMAD, PEAC BE UPON HIM, THE PERSONALITY FOR WHOM GOD ALMIGHTY CREATED THE WHOLE UNIVERSE AND THERAFTER. THE PERSON WHO, RECORDED THE FIRST HUMEN RIGHTS PROTOCOAL. WHEN THE WORLD WAS IN THE AGE OF DARKNESS, OUR PROPHET ELABORATED THE RIGHT OF EACH AND EVERY HUMEN BEING NOT ONLY FOR THOSE WHO ARE EXISTING BUT ALSO FOR THOSE COMING HEREAFTE.I WOULD SAY IF THINGS LIKE THESE HAPPEN AGAIN AND AGIAN WE WILL MOVE BACK TO THE MEDIEVEL AGE WHEN ROLE FOR SURVIVAL OF FITTEST PREVALING, WHEN NO HUMEN AND HEM RIGHT WERE IN PLACE. IT THE HIGH TIME TO LOOK AND STUDY THE STRTEGIES ADOPTED BY PROPHET PBUH for TRANQUALITY AND PEAC RECORDED IN HUMEN HISTORY.
The press was right to publish the cartoons, we should have the right to criticise and make fun of religion. I can understand that Muslims would be offended, but non-believers are offended by the abuse they receive in the Koran. I don’t see any Muslims taking such versus out of the Koran to stop offending non-Muslims. Freedom of speech is an unalienable right unless it is directly trying to incite violence (like many versus in the Koran!). What one person says is always going to offend someone, that’s just life. It does not mean that people have the right to try and stir up violence. The demonstrators should have been arrested! The Danish government should never apologise because its nothing to do with them, the press is independent, something Muslims do not understand! Europe is constantly coming under attack from the Muslim world as being ‘Islamaphobic’. This is probably true, but what is the problem with that? Muslims need to realise that Islam is a paradigm composed of ideas, beliefs and a way of seeing the world. There are many cultural paradigms in this world and they all have to compete with each other, many being mutually offensive to the others. For example cultural paradigms like Christianity or Communism have been rightfully attacked and criticised by many people, including Muslims. ‘Islamaphobia’ is caused by the fact that Muslims are so brainwashed that they are cultural superior they don’t seem to realise that their ideas are their opinions, and are true only to them. The truth is Muslims are so frustrated that their countries and communities are failing, they try and find a scape goat and blame the west. Its also bizarre that Muslim living in the west seem quite oblivious to the fact that if Islam creates such a wonderful Utopia why did they or their parents leave their Muslim countries in the first place!
i think in the year of 2006 human dont need religion.religion was helpful for hundred years ago when people cant understand many things.and some people write books like quran to help people …but quran cant help to people in 2006 because everything changes …camputer/satelitte/book/…i think we must forget religion and tryin to thinkin who are us? and where we are comin in to?i think in 500 years after now human can find way how people living forever young or how if some one die in accident bring him back to life…just try to keep world in our hand and fight with god or gods
